With Spring Break rapidly approaching, and the cost of flights reaching ridiculously expensive rates, it’s time we take matters into our own hands… or feet. If you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense to walk. If you’re going somewhere tropical, you don’t have to worry about getting a beach bod in advance–it will simply develop on your way to your destination. They say you need 10k steps a day for weight loss? Try 200k per day.
Here’s a list of the five best Spring Break destinations you can visit for cheap… if you start walking now:
- Miami, FL
A spring break classic. Between the beach during the day and the nightlife, this destination is guaranteed to please college students looking for a mix of relaxation and fun. With a scenic, coastal walk through Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, the travel time will feel like nothing because there’s just so much to do on the way there! Examples of potential activities include: stopping by theme parks on the Jersey Shore; saying, “Hey,” to Abe Lincoln in D.C; enjoying a Waffle House breakfast in Georgia; dropping your right AirPod on the way down College Hill and not realizing until you reach the South Carolina state line.
- Yellowstone National Park
This is a great opportunity for all my BOLTers out there! This walk is a little more involved, but the beautiful scenery more than makes up for the butt-ugly clothes/shoes/water bottle backpack thing you’ll be wearing the entire time. Making your way through the Midwest, you will cross both the Appalachian Mountain Range and the Mississippi River. Just think of the BOLT street cred you will gain every single time you tell people about your adventurous spring break (we know this trip will be way cooler than anything you could do in the Providence “wilderness”). Once there, you can enjoy some fishing, boating, and even visit the historic Mammoth Hot Springs.
- Las Vegas, NV
Who knows! By the time you get there, you might be 21.
- Cancun, Mexico
Another spring break classic. Unfortunately, this walk requires you to cross the border, so before you leave, think long and hard about how confident you are that they’ll let you back in (and don’t forget your passport!!!!). Seriously, DON’T forget your passport. From there, you will walk through Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán. After your journey, you can relax at an all-inclusive. Worried about having to walk through dense tropical rainforest to get there? Nothing makes a Piña Colada taste better than overcoming adversity.
- Honolulu, Hawaii
Only for strong swimmers…
Now, I know there might be some hesitancy, but walking is all about positive reframing. Like to walk? Think of the iconic quote, “It’s not the Destination, It’s the journey,” and the incredible journey you will have before you even get to your awesome destination! Don’t like to walk? Just tell yourself it’s about the destination, not the journey. And if all else fails, think about all the money you are saving. It will definitely be worth it to walk.
Safe travels! Bon Voyage!
